| DESCRIPTION |
|
A tall, evergreen tree, usually upto 30 m high. Leaves ovate to lanceolate, coriaceous. Flowers yellow or orange, fragrant, solitary, axillary. Fruits 5-10 cm long, ripe capsules ovoid or ellipsoid, valves woody.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
The main diagnostic characters of stem bark of michelia champaca include the longitudinal fissures on the outermot layer of the bark, which on drying, separate like a thin crust with greyish brown projecting fibres on fractured surface, the presence of stone cells with large lumen, phloem fibres with small lumen, secretory cells with mucilage and prismatic and octahedral crystals of calcium oxalate.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is probably native to India, globally distributed in the Indo-Malesian region. Within India it is distributed in the Eastern Sub-Himalayan zone of West Bengal, Assam, Bihar and in the Western Ghats. This species is cultivated and naturalised throughout the tropics.

| CULTIVATION |
|
The tree thrives best in damp climate and requires deep moist soil. It is moderate light demander and is sensitive to frost. Natural regenration is usually plentiful around the mother trees. The tree flowers in hot and rainy weather and seeds late in august.
