| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Rhizome : It is 60-140 cm long, 0.5-2.5 cm in diameter, yellowish white to yellowish brown in color, longitudinally striated with brown patches. When freshly cut, it exudes mucilaginous juice and shows large cavities. Fracture is tough and fibrous. Transverse section shows an outer layer of epidermis covered with thick cuticle and followed by three cortical regions. The outer part of cortex consists of 5 or 6 layers of collenchyma and 12-14 layers of parenchymatous cells containing starch grains.
Leaf : Leaves are large, floating or aerial, orbicular, 20-90 cm in diameter, radiately nerved, floating ones flat, whereas aerial leaves cupped, peltate, entire. Fresh leaves are leathery, but on drying they are nearly membranous and brittle. Petioles of aerial leaves are erect and stout, while those of floating ones are not strong enough; they vary in length according to the depth of water, generally more than 20 cm long.
Flower : Flowers are solitary, 10-25 cm in diameter, white or pinkish white, fragrant, peduncles arising from the nodes of rhizome, sheathing at the base, smooth or rough due to the presence of numerous, small, scattered prickles. Sepals, petals and stamens are spirally arranged; sepals 4-5, cauducous; petals numerous, hypogynous, many seriate, elliptic, obtuse, concave, 5-12.5 cm long and 3-4 cm broad.
Fruit : Fruit is an aggregate of indehiscent nutlets, which remain loosely embedded in the cavities of two enlarged, spongy, turbinate torous. Ripe nutlets are ovoid, roundish or somewhat oblong, upto 1 cm long and 1.5 cm broad.
