| DESCRIPTION |
|
large, evergreen shrubs. Leaves mostly in whorls of 3, sometimes 2, linear-lanceolate, acuminate, coriaceous. Flowers white, rose or red, in terminal cymes. Fruit follicle, 15-23 cm long, connate.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Root : Root system is highly branched. Roots are greyish in colour with long irregular streaks caused by rupture of the bark. The rootm being cylindrical in shape, has spherical outline in transverse section. It is differentiated into outermost cork, middle cortex and innermost vascular cylinder. Cork consists of 5-10 layers of parenchymatous cells forming phellem, phellogen and phelloderm. Cortex consists of few layers of tangentially and radially elongated parenchymatous cells.
Stem : Stem is branched, greyish or greyish green with streaks on the bark surface. The transverse section of stem shows an outermost thin cork which is not easily differentiated into phellem and phelloderm. Cortex is differentiated into outer zone of collenchyma and inner zone of parenchyma. These cells contain choloroplats and starch grains. Cells of inner cortical parenchyma possess crystals of calcium oxalate.
Leaf : Leaves are exstipulate, linear, lanceolate, 10-20 cm long and upto 2.5 cm wide, thick, dark green and shining above and dotted beneath. Venation is uniocostate, reticulate with midrib being stout and the secondary veins arising in very large number, running parallel; stomata are anomocytic. Transverse section of petiole shows a single layer of epidermis covered externally by thick cuticle.

Nerium thrives well on variety of soil and climate. Rich well drained loamy soil and adequate amount of water supply are favourable. It is generally planted in rainy season at a spacing of 2.5 m.
