| DESCRIPTION |
|
A hardy large shrub or small tree, upto 10 m high, with grey or greeenish white rough bark. Branchlets quadrangular, strigose; leaves ovate, acuminate, entire or with a few large distant teeth, rough and scabrous above, densely pubescent beneath; flowers smmall, 3-7 in each head.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Leaf : Leaves are short petioled, cordate or oblong, pointed, entire or coarsely serrate, scabrous; taste bitter and astringent. In transverse section the leaf shows dorsiventral structure. Epidermis is thickly cuticularised and shows abundant hairs which are mostly unicellular and either very short or very long with pointed end. The hair bases possess cystolith of calcium carbonate. Palisade is 2 layered and spongy parenchyma composed of 8-10 layers of cells filled with oil and other cell contents. A transverse section through midrib shows a very small ridge of collenchymatous cells and dorsal side of the midrib being also protected by collenchymatous tissue.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is probably native of India, globally distributed in Indo-Malesia. Within India, it has been recorded in sub-himalayan regions, Central India and Southern Western Ghats.

| CULTIVATION |
|
It is cultivated in gardens almost throughout India upto an altitude of 1500 m for its fragrant flowers. In natural habitat it gows fast on dry steep hill sides and rocky groundes. It can be propagated by seeds or cuttings.
