| DESCRIPTION |
|
An erect annual, 0 to 100 cm high with flaccid, linear, acuminate leaves. Spike 20-30 cm long, flattened, 2-ranked, terminal spikelets sessile, rranged in threes on two sides of the rachis, all fertile or lateral one barren.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Fruit is a caryopsis, oblong, ovoid and tapering at both ends, it is up to 1 cm long and 0.2-0.3 cm wide, dorsally compressed and flattened on the sides with a shallow longitudinal furrow, 3-5 ridges having shallow depression between them. The grains are tightly enclosed and adhering the lemna and palea; pale-greenish-yellow in colour; taste sweetish-acrid. Transverse section of fruit shows single layered epidermis consisting of crescent-shaped, round to oval wavy walled cells, followed by 2-3 layers of thick-walled, scelerenchymatous fibres.

|
This species is native to India and Indo-China and is cultivated throughout warmer parts of the world. Within India, it is cultivated throughout.

| CULTIVATION |
|
It can be grown by varying climatic and soil conditioin. It requires average temperature of 15.5 to 17 dergree celsius with sunny weather or its vegetative growth and dry warm weather for garin ripening.
