| DESCRIPTION |
|
A medium sized tree, up to 18 m high or sometimes even more. Leaves imparipinnate; leaflets 5-7, ovate or elliptic. Flowers lilac or white tinged with pink or violet, fragrant in axillary racemes. Pods woody, compressed, yelloish grey when ripe, elliptic to obliquely oblong, 4.0 - 7.5 cm long wit a short curved beak.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Bark : Bark occurs into curved pieces, black in colour. Outer surface is rough due to the presence of numerous large lenticels appearing as circular dots. Inner surface I syellowish in colour. Microscopically the mature bark shows thick walled cork cells filled with yellowish bronw contents. Phelloderm is composed mostly of parenchyma in which groups of thick walled cells and stone cells are scattered.
Seed : Seeds are squarish in shape and falt with reddish brown leathery testa which is found compressed around and having wrinkles like vascular strands descending away from the hilum portion like zig-zag veins. The embryo contains two thick oily cotyledons nearly bean-shaped with a depression near the plumule. The seed is exalbuminous.

|
It resists drought well, is moderately frost hardy and highly tolerant of salinity. Natural reproduction is through seed or by root suckers. Propagation is done by direct sowing or transplanting one year old seedlings raised in the nursery.
