| DESCRIPTION |
|
Much branched small or medium sized tree upto 8 m high. Bark smooth, pale pinkish or buff with greyish patches. Leaves 10-15 cm long, simple, opposite, oblong or elliptic-oblong, pellucid-punctate, glabrous above, pubescent beneath.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Stem Bark : The bark is 2-4 mm thick and smooth. The outer surface is pale pinkish or buff colourd with grey patches exfoliating in very thin woody plates. The inner surface is brown or buff coloured with pinkish tinge either with fine striations or with small granular masses. The texture is soft and brittle. Odour slightly pungent, test astringent. Microscopically, the bark is covered by phellem or cork all over the surface. The transection of the bark shows no cortical tissue.

|
Grown throughout India upto 1500 m and is cultivated commercially in almost all states including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharshtra, Assam, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu

| CULTIVATION |
|
Guava can grow under a wide variety of climatic conditions but is highly susceptible to frost. It produces abundant crop of better quality fruits in areas having a distinct winter than in tropical areas. It is highly resistant to drought and thrives best on sandy loams.
