| DESCRIPTION |
|
A small to medium sized deciduous tree upto 12 m high; stem 1.5 m in girth, bark blackish brown, deeply cleft into rectangular plates. Heartwood is dark blackish-red or purplish, hard, fibrous and heavy.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Heartwood : Drug occurs as irregular pieces or generally in small, hard, splintery raspings deep blood-red to dark purplish-red or almost black, odourless, taste slightly astringent. The transversely cut surface shows absence of annual rings. Microscopically heartwood exhibits darker tangential bands of dense wood fibres alternating with narrow, paler, nearly continuous bands of pitted xylem parenchyma; vessels large with simple pits, mostly isolated and connected by fine, bright red rays, consisting of xylem parenchyma.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
It is endemic to Cuddapah regions located in southern Andhra Pradesh (India) with sporadic presence in some of the adjoining areas of Tamil Nadu.

| CULTIVATION |
|
It is usully propagated by seeds, but it can also be propagated through cuttings. The poor viability and germinability of seeds posed a severe threat to he very existence of this precious species.
