| DESCRIPTION |
|
An annual o biennial herb with condensed stem and thick, fleshy, tuberous root. Leaves petiolte, basal, long, lyrately divided, coarsely toothed, upper leaves shorter, simple, sublinear, bright green.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Root : Root is cylindrical, tuberous taproot without any seconadry and tertiary branches. It is variable in ize and thickness and tapers to form a slender tail. External surface varies in colour and a few fibrous roots and longitudinal striations are present; taste slightly pungent. Transverse section of root shows 3-10 layers of tangentially elongated, radially arranged, cork cells. Secondary cortex is composed of wide zone of oval to polygonal, elliptical, thin-walled parenchymatous cells followed by secondary phloem, mostly composed of sieve elements and parenchyma, traversed by phloem rays.
Leaf : Lower leaves are hairy, lyrate, coarsely toothed; uppermost simple, sublinear, narrowed at the base; bright green in colour. Transverse section of petiole is neary circular in outline with two lateral wings. Single layered epidermis is covered with thick cuticle; trichomes present only on upper surface, are unicellular. Cortex is 6-12 layered consisting of oval to polygonal parenchymatous cells.
Seed : Seeds are reddish brown, irregularly globose, sometimes flattened, 2-4 mm long, 2 mm wide, surface generally smooth, sometimes wrinkled and grooved at micropylar end; taste oily. Transverse section of seed shows single layered epidermis of nearly rectangular cells covered with thin cuticle followed by integument of radially elongated reddish brwon columnar cells.

|
It is cultivated throughout India upto an altitude of 3000 m or more often from coastal plains to Himalyas and hilly regions. In general, radish is a cold season crop but in some of the regions like South Indiait is taken round the year.
