| DESCRIPTION |
|
Erect, perennial undershrubs, 30-40 cm tall; roots soft, brownish, tuberous about 30 cm long, zig-zag with irregular nodes, bark pale bown, corky, longitudinally fissured.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Root : Upto 15 cm in length and 2 cm in diameter, stout, thick, tortuous, terete, frequently curved and twisted. External colour is greyish yellow to brown; internal colour is whitish grey. Surface is slightly wrinkled and rough with coarse longitudinal markings. Fracture short, irregular; odourless; taste very bitter. Transverse section of root shows stratified cork consisting of 8-10 layers of tabular cells with thickened walls with alternating bands of smaller and larger cells. The secondary meristem cells appear polygonal and isodiametric in tangential section and rectangular and radially flattened in transverse section. Phelloderm is composed of 10 to 12 rows of cellulosic parenchyma.
