| DESCRIPTION |
|
Tall annuals, sometimes shrubby or tree-like. Leaves alternate, broad, palmately 5-11-lobed, serrate. Flowers monoeciou, in terminal subpaniculate racemes, 30-60 cm long. Fruit a pickly capsule of three 2-valved cocci.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Root : Roots are light in weight, profusely branched, outer surface yellowish brown, rough due to presence of longitudinal wrinkles, odourless, taste acrid, fracture granular. In T.S. the root shows periderm, cortex and stele. Highly branchd latex canals are present in the cortex. Some cortical cells contain large oil globules, rosette of calcium oxalate crystals and simple o compound starch grains.
Leaf : Leaves are long petioled, palmately veined, broad, nearly orbicular, 7-10 or more lobed. A number of saucer shaped glands are present on th epetiole and 2 prominent glands at the top of the petiole. Leaves possess paracytic stomata on both the surfaces, more abundant on lower side.
Seed : Seeds are ellipsoidal or ovoid, slightly flattened, externally smooth, bearing one prominent raphe, testa blackish brown or greyish brown, taste slightly bitter and pungent. The testa of seed is thin and brittle, endosperm white and oily. Seed oil viscid, pale yellow or almost colourless, transparent.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is probably native to North East tropical Africa, globally distributed in the Pantropics and is also widely cultivated throughout. Within India, it is found wild in scrub forests of the outer Himalayas, it has been cultivated through the ages in Africa and India, now it is found almost throughout India upto an altitude of 2000 metres

| CULTIVATION |
|
castor is said to be a crop of tropics, though it is cultivated in the sub-tropics to some extent. Castor can withstand dry arid climates, as also heavy rains and floods. It is generally grown on sandy or clayey deep red loams and on good light alluvial loams.
