| DESCRIPTION |
|
A deciduous tree, upto 30 m tall; bark grey, covered with black, conical prickles. Leaves digitate, cowded at the nds of branches; leaflets 5-7, elliptic-lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, glabrous, 5-23 * 1.5-9 cm; petioles long; petiolules small.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Bark : The mature stem bark is 0.5-1 cm thick, pale-ashy to slivery-grey externally and brownish internally. The external surface is rough with vertical and transverse cracks and conical, black prickles. Taste is mucilaginous; fracture fibrous. In transverse section the bark shows 10-15 layered cork composed of thin-walled cells, with a few outer layers having brown coloured contents; rhytidoma present at certain places interrupting the cork. Secondary cortex consists of moderately thick-walled, parenchymatous cells containing orange brown contents.

|
The tree prefers deep, sandy loam derived from granite but shows maximum development in deep, alluvial soil of the valleys. It grows well on well drained hill slopes, provided the soil is modrately deep.
