| DESCRIPTION |
|
Perennial stoloniferous sedge producing hard, globose tubers clothed with matted fibers. Stem erect, triquetrous, about 1 to 1.5 m high.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Tuber : Tubers are black or brownish in colour, round to oblong and knotty, 1.2 - 2.0 cm in diameter, 1.6-2.4 cm in length, fibrous, covered by adventitious rootlets. External surface is covered with erect, tright and dense hairs much longer thn the tubers, exhibiting its deciduous nature. Broken dried tubers show white and starchy appearance. Transverse section of the tuber is characterised by presence of thin-walled round parenchyma, few scattered vascular bundles and distinct endodremis. The cells of ground tissue are mostly filled with starch grains. Epidermis consists of thin-walled parenchyma cells, covered with cuticle and interrupted by multicellular hairs.
