| DESCRIPTION |
|
A small tree, 6-9 m high with spreading branches. Leaves 15-30 cm long, pinnate; leaflets 10-30 pairs, linear-oblong or oblong-elliptic, glabrous above, thnily pubescent beneath. Flowers 6.0-10 cm long, white,pink or crimson, in lax, 2-4 flowered racemes.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Mature stem bark is about 10mm thick, outer surface dark grey in colour, deeply fissured, both longitudinally and transversely, as a result of which the outer border of the bark is not even but irregularly toothed. These fissures are unconnected and measure upto 4 cm in length, 5-8 mm in width and 3-4 mm in depth. The dried bark forms double quill. The outer half of the bark comprising the rhytidome is reddish brown in colour and marked with a few faint tangential striations; while the inner half is almost cream white in colour.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is native to Indonesia and Malesia, globally distributed in the Pantropics. Within India, it is cultivated in many parts such as Punjab, Delhi, Bengal, Assam, Tripura, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and the Andaman Islands.

| CULTIVATION |
|
It is a native of Malaysia, now cultivated in many parts of tropical India. It grows from sea level to about 800 m altitude. The species can grow on a variety of soils, including black cotton soil, poorely structured clays and even water logged areas, but prefers well drained deep sandy loam soi.
