| DESCRIPTION |
|
A suffruticose herb or undershrub upto 1.5 m tall; tap root 15-30 cm long, woody, pale yellow; stems downy with hooked hairs. Leaves imparipinnate, 15-30 cm long; leaflets 5-7, 6-20 * 1-2 cm, lanceolate, acute, base rounded, blotched with white, glabrous above; lower leaves generally 1-3 floliolate; leaflets oblong of suborbicular.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Root : Tap root upto 30 cm long, 1.2 cm wide, tough and woody, externally light yellow to greyish buff in colour; dried roots bear longitudinal striations on the outer surface, internally pale yellow in the wood and buff in the bark region; fracture splintery or fibrous; odour indistinct and taste slightly acrid. Transverse section of young root shows single layered, epidermis of thin walled cells followed by 5-6 layers of isodiametric cortical parenchyma with distinct intercellular spaces, distinct endodermis, single layer of pericycle and di- to triarch stele; large amount of phloem fibres in the primary phloem.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is globally distributed in the Tropics. Within India, it is commonly found in the dry grass-lands, waste places, and open forests in the sub-Himalayan tract from Kashmir to West Bengal and Assam, up to an altitude of 1800 metres, and all over the plains of India.

| CULTIVATION |
|
It is propagated through seeds. The seed coat is hard hence treated with concentrated sulphuric acid for 20-30 minutes. It is sown in nursery / field, preferable during May-June.
