Fresh stem is thick, fleshy, succulent, quadrangular with acutely 4 angled or 4 winged internodes and contracted nodes. Fracture is short fibrous and fractured surface is greenish yellow in colour. At places outer cells whow formation of radical walls, some cells contain chloroplasts or starch grains or raphides of calcium oxalate. Embedded in cortex are some secretory cells. At the corners internal to epidermis, 3 to 4 layers of compactly arranged sclerenchymatous cells are seen. Next to the scelenchymatous zone are found 3 to 4 layers of rectangular cork cells, arranged compactly without any intercellular spaces.
