| DESCRIPTION |
|
Semi-aquatic, perennial, aromatic herbs, rhizomes horizontal, rounded, somewhat vertically compressed, spongy: leaves grass like or sword shaped, longer, slender; flowers small, yellow-green, in a spadix; berries green, angular, 1-3 seeded. Seeds oblong.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Rhizome is light brown with long internodes, root and leaf scars and soothing aromatic colour. Transverse section shows narrow cortical and large stelar regions. Cortex consists of thin walled parenchymatous cells arranged in chains leaving large intercellular spaces, sheathed collateral vascular bundles and bundles of fibres. Endothermal cells are barrel shaped and possess abundant starch grains. Mostly leptocentric and a few collateral vascular bundles in association with leptocentrics are observed in the ground tisue of cells containing dark brown oleoresin content and starch grains are scattered in the ground tissue of both cortex and stele.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is globally distributed in the North temperate hemisphere and tropical Asia. Within India, it has been recorded throughout, in marshes, wild or cultivated, ascending to an altitude of 2200m in the Himalayas.

| CULTIVATION |
|
The plant is grown in clayey loams and light alluvial soil of river banks. The field is irrigated and ploughed with green manure before planting. The best planting season is spring (March - April), but the crop may be planted almost any time of the year taking into consideration their availablility.
