Twining perennial herb; tubers solirtary, globose to pyriform covered with long roots and prominenet eyes not bearing other tubers. Bulbils common, axillary, roundish, brown with prominent numerous, uniformly distributed tubercle like eyes.

|
This species is native to the tropics of the Old world, globally distributed in the Paleotropics, introduced to tropical america probably from Africa. Within India, it is common throughout ascending up to 1850 metres in the Himalayas. It does not thrive in the drier parts of India.

|
Yams are cultivated mostly as garden crops or as subordinate crops with ginger, turmeric, brinjal, sweet potato or maize. They thrive best in deep sandy loam with adequate moisture and good drainage.
