| DESCRIPTION |
|
Prennial climbers with slender, terete, downy stems. Leaves imparipinnate, leaflets 5 - 7, subcoriaceous, elliptic - oblong, obtuse. Flowers blue or white, axillary, solitary. Pods 5 - 10 cm long, flattened, nearly staright, sharply beaked.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Root : Root system consists of a fairly stout tap root with few branches and many slender lateral roots. The root is woody, cream white with a few lenticels united to form transverse cracks.The fresh root is slightly bitter and acrid in taste. The T.S. shows outermost phellem composed of 12-25 rows of thin walled longitudinally elongated cells, some of which are compressed and a few exfoliating. Phellogen is single layered and phelloderm is 2-3 layered, some exfoiating. Phellogen is single layered and phelloderm is 2-3 layered, some cells cotain rhomboidal crystals of calcium oxalate. Cortex is composed of 10 to 12 layers of thin walled almost polygonal or tangentially elongated cells, packed with mostly compound starch grains. Some of the cortical cells contain rhomboidal crystals of calcium oxalate.
Leaf : Rubiaceous stomata with wavy cell walls are present on both upper and lower epidermis. Multicellular trichomes, with two basal cells smaller than the terminal cells are present. A warty sheath covers the apical cell of trichome. In trasnverse section leaf shows a dorsiventral structure. The lower epidremal cells of midrib region are papillose whereas those of lamina are not so noticeably papillose. All along the veins prismatic crystals of calcium oxalate are present. The vein islet number is 7.5 and palisade ratio - 6.0

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
The species is distributed across the tropical regions of the globe from South America to the Old World tropics. It is frequently planted, as an ornamental, in the gardens. This species is probably native to tropical America, globally distriubted in the Tropics. Within India, it is commonly found as an escape in hedges and thickets throughout, up to an altitude of 1500 m, and in the Andaman Islands; also extensively grown in gardens for its flowers.
