| DESCRIPTION |
|
A small evergreen tree, 6-8 m high. Leaves paripinnate; leaflets 4-6 pairs, oblong or oblong-lanceolate. Flowers orange or orange-yellow, eventually turning vermillion, fragrant, in dense axillary corymbs.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Stem Bark : Dried bark is channelled, outer surface is rough with warty protuberances and exfoliations and is rusty brown in colour. Lenticels are conspicuous and occur in these protuberances, circular to transversely elongated. There are also transverse and longitudinal cracks. The inner surface of the bark is reddish brown in colour. The fracture is short and fibrous; odour indistinct an dtaste astringent. Transverse section of mature bark shows cork which is composed of 4 to 10 layers of tangentially elongated cells.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
Globally the species is distributed in the Indo-Malesian region and SriLanka. Within India its distribution is confined to the moist zones of Western and Eastern Ghats (Peninsular India), sub-Himalayan tracts (Uttar Pradesh to Arunachal Pradesh) and Eastern India (Bihar, West Bengal, Orissa and North Eastern states). This species is globally distributed in Indo-Malesia. | CULTIVATION |
|
Propagation from seed provides an easy and relatively rapid means of producing this species. The plants may be raised by direct sowing or by tnspalnting the seedlings raised in nursery beds or pots.
