| DESCRIPTION |
|
Erect, tometose shrubs, 30-150 cm high. Roots tout, fleshy, whitish-brown. Leaves simple, ovate. Flowers inconspicuous, greenish or lucid-yellow, in axillary, umbellate cymes.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Root is tap root type, tapering towards lower end; diameter varies from 8-18 mm. it is smooth and uniform in appearance and bears lateral rootlets; surface is dark brown. Internally it is cream coloured. Fracture is short and starchy; odour pungent; taste bitter and acrid. In transverse section, the cork cells are delimited from the outermost layer of the secondary cortex by a single layer of phellogen. Cork cells are large and suberized and contain some starch grains. The outermost portion of periderm is light brown in colour, broken at places and is composed of dead cells.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
Globally the species is distributed in Africa, Mediterranean to India and SriLanka. In India it is distributed in the sub-Himalayan tracts, ascending upto 1000 metres It is found in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and throughout the drier parts of India. This species is globally distributed from Africa to Sri Lanka. Within India, it is distributed in the sub-Himalayan tracts, ascending upto an altitude of 1000 metres It is found throughout the drier parts of India.

| CULTIVATION |
|
It growswell on well drined soil, like sandy-loam or light red soil, having pH of 7.5 to 8.0 under dry climate. On an average, 60 to 75 cm rainfall is best suited to this rainfed crop.Ashwagandha is normally broadcasted nd the seed rate per hectare is 10 to 12 kg.
