| DESCRIPTION |
|
Perennial erbs or shrubs up to 3 m high. Leaves ovate to orbicular, cordate, irregularly toothed or sub-entire. Flowers yellow or orange - yellow, axillary, solitary.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Root : Tap root is fairely long with a number of lateral branches, 1.5 to 2 cm in diameter, light brown, outer surface smooth with dot like lenticels, bark thin and can be easily peeled off, odour feeble, taste astringent and bitter. T.S. of root shows thin cork of 4 to 7 or more tangentially elongated rectangular cells. Cork cambium is single layered and at lenticel regions followed by 2 to 3 layers of secondary cortex of thin walled, cubical or rectangular cells, several containing small crystals of calcium oxalate. Phellogen is followed by 3 to 4 layers of parenchymatous cortex, some cells of cortex located above the conical strands of parenchymatous cortex, some cells of cortex located above the conical strands of bast are crushed.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is globally distributed in the Pantropics. Within India, it is found in the sub-Himalayan tracts and other hills, upto an altitude of 1200 metres and throughout the hotter parts. It is a common weed on roadsides and degraded lands.

| CULTIVATION |
|
The plant is common throughout India and grows luxriantly on waste lands. It can be easily propagated by seeds. The plant tolerates wide range of soil and climate. It is cultivated for extraction fo fibers.
