Bark : The stem bark is dark grey in colour, with striations and few cracks on the surface, internally red or reddish brown, taste bitter. The bark shows wide zone of cork, cells filled with brownish contents. Periderm including rhytidoma is 1mm thick and rest is occupied by secondary phloem which consists of stratified layers of ceratenchyma alternating with phloem parenchyma and fibres traversed by medullary rays. Prismatic crystals of calcium oxalate are abundantly present. The powder when treated with nitrocellulose in amylacetate gives black fluorescence under ultra violet light.
Leaf : Leaves are variable, elliptic, oblong or oblanceolate, very glossy, dark green and faintly veined, undulate. Microscopically leaf shows a dorsiventral structure, heavily thickened and strongly striated with ridged cuticle on both surfaces. The stomata, present on the lower surface, are ranunculaceous or rubiaceous, and striations emanate from the sides of stomata. The glands are present only on the upper surface. Trichomes are always two armed, each arm being pointed. Mesophyll consists of 2-3 layers of palisade tissue and 5-6 layers of spongy parenchyma. The hypodermal cells are thick walled. Vascular bundle is capped by sclerenchymatous fibers.
Fruit : Fruit is a berry with persistent calyx having five free sepals, long, ovoid, one seeded, green when unripeand yellow onripening. It is differentiated into exocarp, mesocarp and endocarp. The exocarp is characterised by the presence of secretory canals, a thick ring of stone cells having patches of invaginating parenchyma, a ring of collateral vascular bundles and the presence of patches of laticiferous phloem fibers.
