| DESCRIPTION |
|
Tall, perennial herbs. Leaves arising in dense fascicles from short, oblique rihizomes, glaucosus green, rough along margins. Flowers in decompound, spatheate panicles, 30-60 cm long, nodding.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Leaf blades linear, long-attenuated towards the base and tapering towards to a long setaceous point, upto over 90 cm long by 16-18 mm, wide, very firm, glaucous green, glabrous smooth or more or less rough upwards and along the margins; midrib somewhat stout below, whitish on the upper side; primary lateral nerves 4-6 on each side, raised particularly above with 2-4 seconadry nerves between them. A transverse section of leaf shows an upper epidermis with cells of different sizes beneath which there are at close interval groups of sclerenchymatous fibres.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
It grows wild in south India, Sri Lanka and Moluccas. It is cultivated in gardens.

| CULTIVATION |
|
The plant requires warm humid climate, occassional rainfall and plenty of sunshine for their proper growth. Well drained sandy loam soil is preferable for its cultivation. Freshly harvested leaves yield more oil.
