| DESCRIPTION |
|
Scandescent herbs. Leaves petiolate, 5-10 cm long, entire to palmately lobed, minutely dentioculate. Tendrils slender, leaf opposed. Flowers white, dioeciou, solitary, axillary. Fruits ellipsoid or fusiform, round at both ends, bright red when mature.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Root : The fresh tap root is thick, tuberous, long, tapering, more or less tortuous with a few fibrous rootlets atttached to it. Roots are flexible, soft and break with a fibrous fracture. A transection of root shows circular outline and is characetristic of storage type. Parenchyma is full of starch grains and thorough permeation of parenchyma with vascular elements is observed. The cork is composed of rows of cells. Powder of root is yellowish white in colour.
Leaf : Leaves are studded with numerous small round discs or papillae above. They are palmately 5-nerved from a cordate base. T.S. of leaf lamina shows an upper epidermis covered with cuticle and having layer of polygonal cells with wavy walls. Numerous stalkless glands cheifly with bicellular heads are found in depressions of upper epidermis. Stomata of ranunculaceous type are numerous only on lower surface.

|
The lant is propagated by its tuberous roots or by stem cuttings. It grows well on well drained, well prepared, deep friable, loamy red soil under irrigated conditions and it fruits from April to Septrember giving heavy yields.
