Tall, perennial herbs, with leafy stems, upto 2.5 m high. Rhizomes creeping, branched with several erect leafy shoots and panicles. Leaves oblong-lanceolate, acuminate.

|
This species is said to be wild in eastern himalayas but cultivated in East Nepal, Bengal, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam hills.

|
Large cardamom is cultivated between the altitudes of 500 and 1800 m on slopes under chequered shades, preferably along the streams. Temperature near the freezing point adversely affects the growth.
