| DESCRIPTION |
|
Small annual, herb, glabrous upto 50 cm high; stem erect, glabrous. Leaves variable. Entire or variously lobed or pinnatisect, radical leaves long petiled, twice pinnatisect, cauline leaves sessile, ;linear, linear-oblong, entire.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Seeds are small, oval shaped, pointed and triangular at one end, smooth, about 2 - 3 mm long, 1 - 1.5 mm wide; reddish brown, a furrow present on both surfaces extending upto two third ownward. A slight wing like extension present on both the edges of seed. When soaked in water seed coat swells and gets covered with a transparent, colourless mucilage. Taste slightly bitter.

|
This species is native to mediterranean region, introduced and naturalised, cultivated throughout the world. Within India, it is cultivated as a salad plant throughout, it is found as an escape.

It thrives best on moist, loams and also grows on any good light soil. It can be grown at all altitudes, all the year round, but the best crop is obtained in the winter season
