|
It is a native of Afgahnistan, Baluchistan and Persia, apparently wild in warm valleys in outer parts of Western Himalya, hilly tracts of Punjab and Sind, cultivated in western and northern Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, Maharashtra and some parts of Gujarat.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Root Bark : The root bark occurs in thin quills or fragments, curved or chanelled pieces. Outer surface of bark is yellowish grey, marked with fine striations or reticulated wrinkles, furrowed by a band of cork. Inner surface if greyish yellow, smooth and marked with fine striations. Transverse section of root bark shows thin walled, loosely arranged cork cells which contain starch grains and lignin.
Stem Bark : It is greyish brown with easily removable abraded patches of cork. Inner surface is light yellow or yellowish brown. In T.S. it shows tabular cork cells having strongly thickened and lignified inner walls. Phelloderm contains a very few characteristic sclereids either isolated or in small groups and avery few prisms of calcium oxalate.
Leaf : Leaf is dorsiventral, simple, lanceolate, petiolate, entire, acute, unicostate and reticulate. Upper surface is dark green and glossy. Under surface is paler than the upper, smooth and with prominent midrib and veins. Petiole is tinged with red and provided with a furrow along the midrib.
Flower : Powdered drug of the flowers of gulnar is pink in colour and contains abundant fragments of corolla. It shows thin walled, irregularly outlined polygonal epidermal cells with striations, comparatively thick walled polygonal cells, longitudinally elongated cells, annular vessels, spherical cells or prothallus, long fibres and calcium oxalate crystals.
Fruit : Pericarp is of two types - green and red. Green type is somewhat quadrangular in shape having four distinct ridges, yellowish green in colour and glossy with brown spots. It is lemon yellow in olour internally, glossy and having grooves of seeds.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is globally distributed in South Europe, Pakistan, India and West Asia. Within India, it is wild in the western Himalayas between an altitude range of 900-1800 metres, and is cultivated throughout the country for its fruits.

| CULTIVATION |
|
It is a subtropical fruit, seed, growing best in semi arid climate where cool winters and hot summers prevail. It thrives even undr desert conditions. Altough it is highly drought resistant, the pomgranate bears well only under irrigation.
