| DESCRIPTION |
|
Undershrubs, 0.9 - 1.8 m high. Upper leaves small, lanceolate, lower large, ovate, palmately lobed. Flowers small, green, in axillary racemes or panicles, all male or with a few female flowers.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Root Stock : Surface is rough having distinct nodes and buds in the axil of scale leaf, many rootlets coming out from the surface. Bark is very thin. Root surface is longitudinally striated having big, transversely elongated lenticels. Transverse section shows cork consisting of 5-6 layers of suberized or lignified cells having brown pigment. Other 2-3 layers of cortex are sometimes collenchymatous and flattened while other layers are parenchymatous. Fibers are present in phelloderm, phloem and xylem. Medullary rays are mostly uniseriate; rarely biseriate and pitted. Crystals of calcium oxalate are present throughout the tissue except xylem.
Root : Cork is composed of 4-12 layers of suberized or lignified cells. Phelloderm consists of outer 2-3 layers of flattened collenchyma followed by a parenchymatous zone. Fiobers are present in phelloderm, phloem and xylem. Medullary rays are uniseriate, rarely biseriate.
Leaf : In transverse section leaf shows a dorsiventral structure. Palisade is single layered. Cluster crystals of calcium oxalate are distributed throughout the mesophyll. Trichomes are unicellular, thick walled, lignified with slightly striated cuticle, present more on lower surface than on upper one.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species in globally distributed in Indo-Malesia. Within India, it is distributed throughout from Kashmir eastwards to Meghalaya, up to an elevation of 1000 metres and southwards into Peninsular India, ascending to an altitude of 1800 metres in the Western Ghats.
