| DESCRIPTION |
|
Perennial tall herb, upto 6.5 m high with stems of varying thickness and color, many noded. Leaves 1.6 m * 6 cm , linear lanceolate, midrib very stout, erect or drooping.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Stem : Stem is upto 6 m high, cylindrical, solid, juicy, with distinct nodes and internodes, 2-4 cm in diameter; outer surface smooth, shining and polished, pale or dark green to dark yellow or red violet and ofetn striped, having a bud at each node; taste sweet. Transverse section shows a single layered epidermis consisting of thick-walled , lignified, rectangular cells followed by 2-3 layers of sclerenchymatous hypodermis; ground tissue consisting of thin-walled, parenchymatous cells having a number of collateral, conjoint, closed vascular bundles scattered throughout the groundtissue, but more numerous towards periphery; each vascular bundle surrounded by a fibrous sheath of sclerenchyma.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is native to South Pacific islands, cultivated in the tropics. Within India, it is cultivated.
|

| CULTIVATION |
|
It is a tropical crop, requiring long summer with adequate rainfall, 50 to 100 cm or more. Fairly dry, sunny, cool, frost free ripening and harvesting season favors high yield. Sugarcane grows under varied soil conditions, but it is mainly grown on alluvial, black cotton and red soils.
