| DESCRIPTION |
|
A soft wooded, fast growing, short lived tree, 7.5 m tall, polygamous; stem unbranched, straight, cylindrical with copious latex. Leaves large, 30-62 cm across, palmately nd deeply 7-lobed, each lobe is pinnately lobed again forming a rounded crown or tuft at the top of stem

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Leaf : Long, club shaped having glandular hairs with multicellular heads prsent on the peiole and along the principal veins. Ranunculaceous stomata are present on the lower surface. Petiole in transverse section through the distal end exhibits a circle of numerous widely spaced collateral vascular bundles surrounding a very large, parenchymatous pith.
Stem : Glandular hairs are present on the young internodes of the stem. Stem swollen at the base owing to dilation of the primary cortex and pith. Primary cortex is largely composed of collenchyma. Pericycle including massive, isolated starnds of fibres, in the form of caps of the well-developed, radially elongated groups of phloem.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is native to Tropical America, now widely cultivated in the tropics and subtropics. Papaya was introduced into India in the 16th century and is naturalised, it is cultivated in most parts of India.

| CULTIVATION |
|
It thrives best in areas where temperature is between 10 to 38 degree celsius. It grow from sea level to the altitude of 1000 m. It does not tolerate frost and strong winds. It grows on almost any type of well drained soil. Alluvial sandy, lateritic, gravelly are suitable
