| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Market samples of the drug consist of transversely cut circular pieces of female spadix, about 2.0-3.0 cm in diameter and 2.0-3.5 thick, brownish-grey, rough and scaly; cut surface has a central core, surrounded by fruits enclosing the seed covred partly by aril. Seeds are kidney shaped, 0.4-0.6 cm long an d0.3-0.4 cm wide, smooth, shiny, greyish-brown with a dent. Transverse section of fruit shows more or less loosely arranged, thin-walled, parenchymatous cells having more or less loosely arranged, thin-walled, parenchymatous cells having more or less isodiammetric cells filled with brown content and numerous acicular crystals of calcium oxalate.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is globally distributed from Tropical Himalayas to Burma. Within India, it has been recorded in the sub-himalayan tract, West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and in Andamans islands. It is widely cutivated.
