| DESCRIPTION |
|
A slender, twining, foetid shrub. Leaves opposite, ovate to lanceolate, entire, long-petiolate. Flowers purple or violet, tubular or funnel shaped, nearly sessile, in axillary and terminal, often scorpiod cymose panicles.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Root : Tap root is cylindrical or sub-cylindrical, tortuous, having a number of branches and rootlets; surface dark brown, rough due to longitudinal wrinkles, ridges, fissures, remnants of rootlets, scars and lenticels; fracture foetid; taste indistinct. In transverse section the mature root shows 6-13 layers of cork, a few outer layers somewhat collapsed, lignified and filled with brown content; cork cambium 1-2 layered.
Stem : It is slender, subcylindrical, showing a dumb-bell shaped appearance in transverse view due to presence of two prominent furrows running opposite each other on both surfaces; external surface dark brown, having longitudinal anastomosing wrinkles, ridges and a few transverse cracks and circular lenticel; fracture fibrous, odour foetid; taste indistinct.
Leaf : It is simple, petiolate, stipulate, 10-15 cm long, 5-6 cm broad, somewhat glabrous, ovate, entire, acute or cuspidate; stipules are ovate, lanceolate, bifid, entire, acuite, base broad with hairy surface; odour foetid; taste indistinct. In transvrse section the petiole shows a structure similar to midrib but differs in possessing trichomes comparativelysmaller, as well as two more somewhat spherical accessory bundles, one on each side of median vascular bundle.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is globally distributed in Indo-Malesia. Within India, it is found in the Himalayas from Dehra Dun eastwards up to an altitude of 1800 metres, and also in Bihar, Orissa, Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Tripura.

| CULTIVATION |
|
Th eplant can be cultivated on a variety of soil ranging from heavy black cotton to light porous soils. It is propagated by cuttings and soil layering apart from seeds.
