| DESCRIPTION |
|
A medium sized glabrous tree 8-15 m tall; branhlets slender. Leaves simple, aletrnate, obovate-oblong or elliptic, nerves. Flowers fragrant, dark scarlet, in many flowered pendulous racemes.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Root : Root is brown in colour with uneven surface. Transverse section shows several layers of rectangular storied cork cells; parenchymatous secondary cortex containing starch grains, clustered crystals of calcium oxalate, gum resin and embedding radial rows of phloem fibres in the bark region. Vascular cylinder consists of radial rows of vessels, xylem fibres, ray cells having starch grains and clustered crystals of calcium oxalate.
Leaf : Leaf is simple, petiolate, ovate to oblong, minutely denticulate, unicostate reticulate, dorsiventral; upper surface smooth, dark green; lower surface rough, faint green. Transverse section through midrib hows single layered cuticularized upper and papillose lower epidermis provided with stomata, several layers of collenchymatous hypodermis provided with stomata, several layers of collenchymatous hypodermis and bundles of fibres towards the upper epidermis.
Fruit : Fruit is a drupe, green, oblong, bluntly quadrangular, truncate at both ends, crowned by persistent calyx lobes, thick fleshy fibrous exocarp, hard stony endocarp. Transverse section of fruit shows outer fleshy fruit wall consisting of several layers of thick walled epidermis and inner composed of comparatively thin walled loosely arranged parenchyma cells containing starch grains and calcium oxalate crystals.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is globally distributed from Indo-Malesian region to Australia. Within India, it has been recorded in Jammu & Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Assam, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
