| DESCRIPTION |
|
A moderate-sized, deciduous tree, upto 3 m high. Leaves bipinnate with spines. Flowers yellow, in heads, arranged in terminal panicles about 30 cm long. Pods black, 10-20 cm long, narrow, ligulate, with 10-20 seeds.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Bark : Pieces of stem bark are 4-10 mm thick, 8-15 cm long and 3-6 cm wide, flat or slightly curved, light yellowish grey to nearly white. Lenticels are clearly recognisable in young bark as brown coloured, somewhat transversely elongated pores. The inner surface is pinkish white when fresh and brown to reddish when dried. In transverse section, the tissues are broadly divided into two regions, periderm and phloem. The cork cells are thick walled and tangentially elongated, occassionally containing tannin. Phloem comprises of phloem fibres, sieve tubes, phloem parenchyma and phloem ray cells along with a few small patches of stone cells scattered here and there.

|
It grows on a variety of soils from shallow and gravelly on hill slopes to deep alluvial. Its best growth is seen on loose deep soil. On stiff clay and shallow dry soils, it is rather stunted. It avoids sand dunes saline soils.
