| DESCRIPTION |
|
A medium sized tree, about 20 m high and 1.5-2 m girth. Branches spreading horizontally, sub-whorled; dark brown, rough with shallow fissures. Leaves, 7.5-20 * 8-16 cm, elliptic-oblong or ovate, acute or shortly acuminate.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Bark is externally greuish-green with shallow fissures, exfoliating in small irregular woody scales; internally light reddish to reddish-brown; taste bitter. Transverse section hows outer most zone of the bark having rhytidoma; cork 4-6 layered, composed of thin-walled, rectangular cells; phloem fibres similar in structure as found in inner bark. Middle bark is composed of rectangular or tangentially elongated cells, some containing chlorophyll, most cells thick-walled but a few thin-walled containing prismatic crystals of calcium oxalate, a few cells with brwon contents. Inner bark consists of groups of fibres alternating with phloem, traversed by uni ton triseriate phloem rays; phloem composed of sieve tubes, phloem fibres, companion cells and phloem parenchyma; phloem fibres lignified with narrow lumen and pointed ends.

|
It thrives best in well drained alluvial soil. The plants can be propagated by seeds or by shoot or root cuttings. Manure fruits are collected and allowed to rot for 3-4 days.
