| DESCRIPTION |
|
A shrub or small tree without aerial roots; all parts hispid-pubescent. Leaves oppoite, ovte, obovate, elliptic or oblong-lanceolate, subcordate or cuneate, serrate-toothed or crenate in upper part, hispid-pubescent on both surfaces.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Roots : Roots are almost cylindrical, occasionally compresed at places, external surface brown to dark brown with deep, elliptical cracks and tangentially arranged rows of lenticels; fracture splintery. Transverse section shows 5-10 layers of cork, consisting of thin-walled, compressed cells, outer layers exfoliating. Secondary cortex is wide, consisting of irregularly arrange, tangentially elongated, thin-walled cells, a few containing rosette crystals of calcium oxalate and dark red coloured contents.
Stem Bark : The bark is 2-5 cm thick, and rusty greenish grey in colour. The surface skin is extremely thin. Colour of the bark is not uniform throughout its thickness. Outer two thirds has brick red colour and granular appearance while inner portion is light coloured. Outer bark breaks with clean short fracture. Taste is astringent.
