| DESCRIPTION |
|
A much branched, small tree, 5-6 m tall. Leaves alternate, ovate-lanceolate, 8-22 * 3-8 cm, 3-nerved at base, glabrous above, pubescent and with numerous red glands beneath; petiole bearing two small glands near apex.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
The red powder covering the fruit is fine, granular, mobile, dull red or madder red coloured, floating on water. The powder under microscope shows glands and hairs. The glands are depressed and globular, containing deep red coloured resin, secreted by many club shaped cells radiating from a common center. They are 40-100 microns in diameter. The hairs are thick walled, curved, yellow coloured, unicellular and arranged in small radiating groups, walls lignified.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
Globally the species is distributed in the Indo-Malesian regions, including SriLanka, Pakistan and Australia. Within India it is distributed very widely throughout the tropical regions. This species is globally distributed from Indo-Malesia to Australia. Within India, it is found throughout except in the drier zones upto an altitude of 1500 metres in the hills.

|
Natural reproduction takes place by seeds which fall to the ground in the beginning of the hot season nd germinate in the rainy season. Artficial beginning is done by sowing fresh seeds in April.
