| DESCRIPTION |
|
Herbaceous, twining annuals. Leaves trifoliate, leaflets broadly ovate, elliptic or rhomboid-ovate, unequal at base. Flowers purple in axillary, pendulous racemes. Pods 5-10 cm long, curved, tutgid, longitudinally ribbed, densely clothed with persistent pale brown or grey, irritant bristles.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Seed : The seed is characterised by the presence of a single layered palisade with irregularly cell wall and light line passing through the upper part, single layer of parallely arranged bone shaped columnar cells, presence of substantial number of irregularly shaped stone cells just below the palisade layer in the hilum region around vascular sac and abundance of large, round to oval starch grains measuring 17 to 25 microns in parenchyma cells of cotryledons.
Root : The outer surface of root is dark brown to black in color and slightly rough due to prominent lenticels and a few rootlets. The outermost tissue of the root is the cork which is narrow and light black in color. At wounded or injured region of the root almost all the cortical cells contain rectangular crystals.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
Globally this species is widely distributed in the tropical regions of Asia. Within India it is presence is very widespread and includes Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This species is globally distributed in Pantropics. Within India, it is found almost throughout in open areas including Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

|
This crop can be grown on a wide range of soils but it does well on sandy to clayey loam, provided drainage is adequate. The best season for planting is July - August
|
