| DESCRIPTION |
|
Deciduous tree, upto 18 m high, bark dark grey or blackish. Leaves alternate, pinnate, 15-23 cm long, with or without terminal leaflet, leaflets 4-5 pairs, lanceolate, acuminate, sub-oppoite, coricaceous , 7-12 cm long.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Peculiar crooked, horn - shaped, insect galls, 15 - 20 cm long, having various shapes and sizes are formed on leaf stalks during autumn. The wrinkled purplish brown galls are hollow filled with white - greyish green dust. Gall intensive formation is observed in warmer regions and is much less or even absent at highr altitude. Dried galls are thin-walled, generally cylindrical, tapering at both the ends, greyish-brown extrenally and reddish brown internally; each gall contains numerous dead insects; odour terebinthine; taste of powdered galls, strongly astringent and slightly bitter. Transverse section of gall shows the collapsed epidermis on both the sides, thin-walled, tangentially elongated epidermal cells; thin-walled, oval or circular ground tissue.

| CULTIVATION |
|
The tree grows on hot dry slopes with shallow soil or on open rocky ground and limestone soil. Ntural seedlings spring up under bushes. It can be propagated by seeds and by vegetative method.
