DESCRIPTION
Perennial herb1.5-3 m high; rootstock tuberous, insipid; stem cylindric, terete, subwoody at the base. Leaves simple, alternate, spirally arranged, 15-30 * 3.0-7.5 cm, subsessile, oblong or oblanceolate-oblong, acute or acuminate, often cupidate, glabrous above, silky pubescent beneath, base rounded, sheath coricaceous.
   
PHARMACOGNOSY
Rhizome : Elongated, tuberous, sub-cylindrical, 20 - 45 * 3 cm; upper surface marked with small circular scars of the origin of stem; rootlets few, knotty adhering mostly to the lower surface, fracture fibrous exposing a yellowish brown fractured surface; odourless; tatse sweetish. Transverse section of the rhizome shows single layered epidermis consisting of cubical thin - walled cells followed by cork composed of 6 - 8 layers of rectangular parenchymatous cells, ground tissue consist of thin - walled parencymatous cells containing starch grains measuring 7 - 14 * 5 - 13 microns.

Leaf : Thick, simple, dark green, 17 - 34 cm long and 5 - 13 cm broad, entire, sub-sessile, oblong, acute to acuminate, cuspidate, glabrous above and silky pubescent below, base rounded. Transverse section of leaf shows epidermis with thick cuticle.

Stem : 1.8 - 2.7 m tall, somewhat woody at the base and covered with successive convolute leaf sheaths. Stem is unbranched or sometimes branched with distinct internodes. Colour greenish white or pink due to pigmentation. Transverse section of stem shows uniseriate epidremis.
   
DISTRIBUTION
The species is widely distributed in India, Bangladesh, Myanmar (earlier Burma), Malaysia, New Guinea, Australia, China, SriLanka and Taiwan. This species enjoys a wide distribution throughout India up to an altitude of 1200 m, mostly occurring in moist, partially shaded localities. Within India its geographical distribution is in the sub-Himalayan tract from Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh eastwards to Arunachal Pradesh ; and in the Western ghats in Maharastra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. In Karnataka, it occurs in the districts of Mysore, Chickmagalur, Coorg, North and South Kanara and Shimoga. In Kerala, it is present in the districts of Cannanore, Palghat, Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur and Nilambur. The plant also occurs as a weed in orchards, boundaries of cultivated fields, in the depressions along roads and rail tracks and forest margins situated close to habitation. This species is globally distributed in Indo-Malesia. Within India it is commonly found throughout up to an altitude of 1800 m, in the moist, shady localities under the deciduous forests; also cultivated for ornament.
   
CULTIVATION
The plant thrives on rich moist soil under partial shade. Propagation is usually through rhizome.
