| DESCRIPTION |
|
Erect, branched, robust, annual herb, 50-135 cm tall, stem terete below, 4 angled upwards. Flowers small, numerous, greenish-yellow, tinged with purple, in profuse panicles.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Root : Root is generally small, oblique, 5 - 10 cm long, light brown, somewhat twisted and gradually tapering, bearing a few rootlets or their remnants. Transverse section of root shows 2 - 4 layers of cork. Secondary cortex is represented by 4 - 12 layers of thick walled, parenchymatous cells, some showing radical wall formation and some tangentially elongated with sinuous walls. Secondary phloem is composed of thin walled strands of sieve tubes, copanion cells and phloem parenchyma.
Stem : Stem upto 1 m long and 6 mm in diameter, glabrous, yellowish brown to purplish slightly quadrangular above and cylindrical below having large continuous easily separable yellow pith. Transverse section of stem shows single layered epidermis, externally covered with a thick striated cuticle present in young stem and in old stem epidermis remains intact but cells flattened and tangentially elongated four ribs also consists of epidermis and parenchymatous cortical cells.
Leaf : Opposite, cauline, broad at base, ovate or lanceolate, entire, acuminate, glabrous, usually with 5 - 7 prominent lateral veins , branching from the axils of the leaves which ramify further into paniculate inflorescence.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This speices is globally distributed in India, Nepal and Bhutan. Within India, it is found in the temperate Himalayas in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Khasi hills of Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh between an altitude range of 1200-3000 metres

| CULTIVATION |
|
The plants can be grown in variety of soils with sandy loam rich in carbon and humus. It can be grown in sub-temperate regions between 1500-2100 m altitude. Plants can be propagated by seeds.
