| DESCRIPTION |
|
A glabrous hrb 30-100 cm tall, root fusiform, thick, stem slender, hollow. Leaves pinnately dissectd, 15-20 cm long,leaflets ovate, laciniately cleft into linear, entire or dentate lobes, upper leaves smaller and less divided.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Fruits greenish-brown, slightly curved, elongated; mericarps usually separate free from the pedicel; carpophores, upto 7 mm long, 2 mm broad, almost equally five sided, narrow, tapering to each end, acruate, glabrous, brown with five very narrow, yellowish primary ridges; endosperm orthospermous; odour and taste aromatic and characteristic. Transverse section of fruit shows pericarp with outer epidermis composed of thick walled, polygonal tabular cells with a thick outer wall and striated cuticle; trichomes absent; vittae four, dorsal, intercoastal and two commissural extending the length of each mericarp, with an epithelium of brown cells and volatile oil in the cavity.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is globally distributed in Baluchistan, Northern Asia, Europe and Northern Africa.
|

| CULTIVATION |
|
It is cultivated as a summer cop in hilly regions and as a winter crop in plains of north india, it requires 15 to 20 cm rainfall and extremely cold winter for its proper growth.
