| DESCRIPTION |
|
Prostate or suberect undershrubs. Stems and rachis clothed with prickles. Leaves bipinnate, sensitive to touch, pinnae 2-4, digitatively arranged, with 10-20 pairs of leaflets. Flowers pinkish, in globose heads.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Roots occur in entire condition with secondary and tertiary roots attached. The shape of the root is more or less cylindrical, slightly tapering with barnching on all sides. Colour dull reddish brown, surface rough. Fracture hard and fibrous. Wood occupies 1/3 rd diameter of root. In transverse section, roots are characterised by the presence of 6 to 8 layers of cork cells. The starch grains are simple or compound. Several cells of the cortex also contain tannin. Rhomboid crystals of calcium oxalate are also present in this tissue.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is probably native to South America, naturalised pantropically. Within India, it has naturalized nearly throughout the tropical and sub-tropical parts. It is found in mostly marshy and open waste area.
