| DESCRIPTION |
|
A beautiful herbaceous climber with underground white tuberous rhizome. Leaves alternate, sessile, ovate-lanceolate with acuminate tips prolonged into a tendril-like spiral. Flowers showy, axillary, solitary, or subcotymbose towards the ends of barnches, yellow, and finally scarlet o crimson

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Tubers are cylindrical or flattened, sometimes pointed at both ends, seldom consisting of two tubers uniting at right angles. The upper surface bears a circular scar marking the point of origin of stem; undersurface shows another mark to which thin, small rootlets are frequently attcahed. The dried tubers possess a brownish exterior surface and are dullw hite and fairnaceous internally. Fracture is short; taste bitter. The tuber is characterised by the presence of single layered cuticularised epidermis followed by ground parenchyma, in which the vascular bundles are scattered.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
A Paleotropic species found in Africa, Madagascar, India to Indo-China and Malesia. It is found throughout tropical India. This species is globally distributed in the Paleotropics. Within India, it is found throughout the tropical region common in the moist deciduous forests.

| CULTIVATION |
|
It can be grown on almost all types of soil, but thrives best on sandy loams. Seeds or tubers are sown in the last week of June till mid July.
