| DESCRIPTION |
|
Succulent, prostate, annual herbs, upto 50 cm long. Leaves variable, obovate to spathulate, fleshy. Flowers bright yellow, in terminal clusters or sometimes axillary clusters subtended by 2-8 involucral leaves.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Root : Roots are cylindrical, small, oblique, surface smooth, brownish-grey; secondary roots, less in number, root hairs abundant in upper region; fracture short. Transverse section of root shows 5-15 layers of cork, inner half filled with reddish brown contents. Secondary cortex is composed of thin walled, oval cells, having intercellular spaces. Pericycle fibres are present I patches. Secondary phloem consists of sieve tubes and parenchymatous cells.
Stem : It is almost cylindrical, swollen at the nodes, ribbed, branched, 0.1 to 0.2 cm in diameter; fracture short; odour chracteristic. In transverse section stem whows wavy outline and 5-10 layers of thin walled cork, with reddish brown content in a few cells. Secondary phloem is mostly composed of sieve tubes and parenchyma cells.
Leaves are simple, sub-sessile, cuneiform, rounded and truncate at the apex; 0.3 to 2.5 cm long and 0.1 to 0.6 cm wide, oblong, spathulate, smooth and greenish brown. Transverse section of midrib shows a collateral vascular bundle surrounded by a sheath of palisade cells. Spongy parenchyma cells are more or less isodiammetric and loosely aranged.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is globally distributed in the Pantropics. Within India, it is found almost throughout. It is a weed in gardens and cultivated lands.

| CULTIVATION |
|
It is cultivated as a vegetable in the plains from march to june and in the hills from april to middle of eptember. It can be grown on a variety of soils, but thrives best on rich loam.
