| DESCRIPTION |
|
A glabrous, much branched shrub or small tree. Leaves opposite, sub-sessile, elliptic or broadly lanceolate, entire, acute or obtuse, often mucromelate. Flowers small, white or rose coloured, fragrant, in large terminal pyramidal panicled cymes.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
The leaves are simple with aromatic smell when crushed and are sweet, mucilaginous and slightly astringent in taste. Petiole is concavo-convex in trasnsection with a stele consisting of an intraxylary phloem and continuous xylem cylinder within. The transverse section of leaf presents an isobilateral structure with ranunculaceous type of stomata on both the surfaces. Some of the epidermal cells are specialized into biggr elliptical mucilage sacs. The parenchyma of leaf contains oil globules and monoclinic prisms of calcium oxalate crystals.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is globally distributed in the Paleotropics. Within India, it is cultivated throughout for its leaves and as a hedge-plant, mainly in Punjab and Gujarat, and to a small extent in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The more important centres of production are: Faridabad in Gurgaon district (Punjab) and Bardoli and Madhi in Surat District (Gujarat).

| CULTIVATION |
|
Plant gorws on any type of soil, from light loam to clay loam, but does best on heavy soils which are retentive of moisture. It tolerates little alakalinity in the soil. Propagation is done by seeds and cuttings. Seeds are sown in nursery beds kept flooded with water for some days before sowing.
