| DESCRIPTION |
|
A moderate sized, deciduous tree, 9-12 m high. Leaves bipinnate; leaflets ovate-lanceolate, serrrate. Flowers lilac, fragrant, in axillary panicles. Drupes ovoid o globose, 1.2 - 1.8 cm in diameter, yellow and wrinkled when ripe; stones 5 celld, 5-seeded.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Stem Bark : Bark pieces are usually 4-8 cm long, 1-2 cm broad, 1-1.5 cm thick and curved. Lenticels are absent. Surface is scaly, colour blackish grey before and snuff brown after scarping with a scalpel, flaking off in small pieces having cracks and fissures with clear cut edges. Fracture of outer bark is splintery and inner bark fibrous. Odour not characteristic, taste bitter. Trasnverse section shows rhytidoma along with alternate zones of cork and secondary phloem. Cork cell are rectangular.
Leaf : Leaves are bipinnate, occassionally tripinnate. The leaflets are glabrous with short petiolules, ovate or lanceolate, entire or serrate. The leaves are faintly bitter which distinguishes them from true azadirachta leaves. T.S. of leaf shows the presence of one layer of upper epidermis with thick cuticle. Some of the epidermal cells are transformed into glands. The lower epidermal cells are similar to that of upper epidermis but somewhat smaller in size.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is native to west Asia, naturalised throughout the tropics. Within India, it is said to be cultivated and naturalised almost throughout, in the plains as an ornamental avenue tree.

| CULTIVATION |
|
It is found growing under a wide range of soils. It can be grown on saline, alkaline and slightly acidic soils but it prefers alluvial sandy soils. It thrives well in areas having 600-1000 m average annual rainfall.
