| DESCRIPTION |
|
An erect annual herb, 30-50 cm tall, aromatic. Leaves, 3-folite, leaflts obovate, cuneate at base, rounded, truncate or emarginate at apex, glaucous beneath. Flowers axillary, sessile, solitary or in pairs, white o yellowish white.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Seed : Seeds are yellow-brown to cinnamon coloured, oblong, rhomboidal with deep furrow on both the sides, 2-5 mm long, 2.3-5 mm broad, smooth, very hard; hilum present in the notch; seeds become mucilaginous when soaked in water; odour pleasant; taste bitter. Transverse section of seed coat shows irregular surface due to presence of several bulges. Palisade consists of columnar cells which are flat at base, but tapering to a point at the apex, except in bulges where they are flattened at apex too. A clear light line passes through the palisade by pointed ends.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is globally distributed in the Mediterranean region, Europe, Asia, South Africa and Australia and introduced into America. Within India, it is cultivated throughout for culinary and medicinal purposes, and also for fodder, it has naturalised in some parts.

| CULTIVATION |
|
in India, Methi is grown as cold season crop. It can withstand frost and very low temperature. If taken as an irrigated crop, it can be grown throughout the year. It is best suited in moderate to low rain fall areas.
