| DESCRIPTION |
|
A deciduous tree, upto 15 m high. Leaves long petioled, 3-foliate, leaflets broadly obovate with cuneate or deltoid base, coriaceous, obtuse, glabrous above when old, finely silky and conspicously reticulately veined beneath. Flowers bright orange-red, sometimes yellow, large, in rigid racemes.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Flowers are companulate, sepals possess two types of multicellular epidermal appendages on the lower side viz, uniseriate, thick walled and club shaped secretory, stomata anomocytic; petals orange red; stamens diadelphous; ovary monocarpelallry with unicellular thin walled and two or three celled trichomes; powder show rhomboidal calcium oxalate crystals and abundant tanniferous cells, under ultraviolet light it gives a green fluorescence, whereas on treatment with 1 N methonolic NaOH, the fluorescence is greenish black.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is globally distributed in Indo-Malesia. Within India, it is found throughout, except in the arid regions, ascending the Himalayas up to 900 m and in Peninsular India up to 1200 metres
|

| CULTIVATION |
|
The tree grows in open plains in natural habitat and is highly drought resistant. It reproduces by seeds and suckers. The natural reproduction starts early in the rainy season. If mositure is plentiful and sustained, germination of seeds takes place.
